I am searching for any information about Operation Snowbound which occurred around 1956-1960. The USAF in Europe was alerted to drop supplies to small Italian village and I was a crew member on a C-119 from the  10th ACC a squadron of 60th ABW. We received a Citation from the Italian Government, presented by the then  U.S. American Ambassador to Italy, Clare Boothe Luce. We were presented with a white ribbon at the ceremony as there was no official ribbon authorized by Congress at that time. The ribbon was available later on but I was not able to obtain the original orders for the mission to receive the Citation.

Virginia Diane SONTCHI-SHULZE-PIELOW-WISE (Hillsboro, OR, USA) EMAIL

Debbie Mayfield-- Do you remember me, Diane Sontchi?  I was there from 1960-63.  We used to walk together to the base library and wait for our fathers to pick us up after school.  I remember your dad's baby-blue Cadillac.  I remember you telling me you wanted to be a dermatologist, and I told you I wanted to be a singer.  I did sing, in the college choir, and studied voice professionally and performed in some musical theater productions.  Loved it!  I have three sons, and five grandchildren.  I currently live with my fiance' in Hillsboro, Oregon USA.
When I first found this website, I looked for you.  I downloaded our ninth-grade class pictures, and I must say I was overcome with many great memories.  I have often wondered where our other classmates are.  I know from Tom Laseter, that Dana Bloodworth died of cancer.  I really liked her, and was surprised to hear of her death.  She dated Billy Jim Dotson - my secret major crush.  Billy Jim worked for my dad in the Hydraulics shop.  What a hottie !  I must confess some jealousy...  I spoke on the phone to Dean Brown, our biology teacher, who is a professor at University of Colorado in Fort Collins.  Lo and behold, he remembered me!  Remember the parties at his house?  I don't know if you remember my brother Larry or not.  We were in the same grade together.  Au revoir!

 John NORTHCUT (Montréal, Québec, CANADA)

I have fond memories of my service at the LAON AB from 1964-1965.  I enjoyed my time so much there, I had applied to have my tour extended but the 'higher ups' in the USAF turned down my application.
A few years ago, I visited la Ville de Laon and much enjoyed seeing all the old places and some new ones.  The local residents were very helpful in pointing out things that I had forgotten.
If there is a reunion of LAON AB devotees, I would be much interested to attend.

Bonjour,
Bien amicalement,

  Laurence LAMBERT (Ainsa, SPAIN) EMAIL

Bonjour.
Hello. My name is Laurence Lambert. Still looking for my origins and the reasons why my mother left me when I was 3 years old, I would like to know if anybody recalls her. Her name was Mauricette Lambert. She was 18 years old when she worked in the laundry of Laon-Couvron's American Base. She was an orphan since she was abandoned when she was 10 months. She died eleven years ago and I could never see her again. She only had a sister but they didn't have much relation because my mother's behaviour disliked my aunt. This one told me that my father could be American because my mother frequented soldiers. She often went to " Les Seigneurs" or " Le Normandy" in Laon, as well as other places (in Monampteuil too). I am a dual heritage woman.
Thanks for your help.
Wish you a nice day...

I enjoyed my time in Etain and Laon finding them both charming and the people very nice and interesting. I love the way the town of Laon was laid out with the down town being down and uptown being up; sort of being a split level city. I remember the restaurant with the open hearth for cooking pizzas. I can't remember their names but remember the lady that own the place had white hair and her son in law had been station at Laon and return after being discharged from the service. I can remember only a few people that I was stationned with such as the First Sargent Plourdy ; Idon't know if that name is spelled correctly or not; also chuck, Romero that married the First Sargent's daughter. they pulled town patrol a lot, and main gate. Their was a young man I remember that slept with his uniform on most the time even he to shower with it on. I don't know if their is anyone out that remembers me but I would sure like to hear from the ones that was stationed at Laon or Etain during 1957,58,59,60.   Patrick SERAYET (Paris - France) EMAIL

My grandmother was a native of the Laon area (exactly Anizy-le-Château). Then she spent most of her life at Charmes a small town close to La Fère. As a young boy in my teens I visited very often my mom with my parents  who were living in the Paris suburbs. I have very fond memories of these visits which gave me the opportunity to see somptuous american cars like Chevys, Pontiacs, Oldsmobiles and the likes of the american families working at Laon AFB : a dream for a young Frenchman in a country slowly recovering from the WWII debacle. My father was also an american admirer and all the modern civilisation they represented. By chance, my grand mother had an american family as her neighbours. I remember the name of the father : Tom Meyers who worked as a photo equipment  technician on the RF 101 Voodoos at the base.
He and his wife were very kind with my grandmother and even though they did not speak the other's language, they managed to understand each other. My grand-ma also served as a baby sitter from time to time for the three young kids of the family. I remember the profund kindness of these people, the Kennedy-like smile of Tom and the pleasure I had to meet them. Fortunately I learnt English at the High School and I acted as a translator on a number of occasions. These were very good times. Unfortuately the AFB closed and Tom's family moved to Mountain Home in Idaho where an F-111 squadron was based, I guess. No more news were exchanged as times went by. I deeply regret it but that's life.
Just to  add a footnote : When I was around 5 years old I remember to have been with my parents at an open day at Couvron AFB. It was the first time I saw jet aircraft so closely. I assume the famous Skyblazers presented their formidable aerobatic show. I fear that it is from this very date  that I am an an aviation craze and a whatever  is flying buff . To tell the truth my occupation is now aircraft financier thanks to the presence of this Couvron AFB and the friendly american people I had the chance to meet as a result.

It's nice to read through all the emails and thus reflect on the many memories I possess of my years at Laon AB and France. I was a young adventurous airman in the 60s and my tour there brought both joy and sadness. Laon and France will always be part of my life. I married a young French girl from Mons-en-Laonnois, named Monique Leczinski (Who I still deeply love after 41 years) and buried a son (8 months old) in its cemetery. Monique and I come back to France as often as we can, since I consider France as my second home. I thank everyone for their contributions and comments on this web site. Keep up with all your memories and stories.

I give thanks to everyone who make this Phenomenon Site possible.I was station at Laon AB from 1955-1957,part of that time included about 1 year with DET.#1 38TH BOMB GP in Landstul AFB in Germany. In 1955 I was an A/2C right out of Tech School from Lowry AFB, in Denver,Colo. Fire Control System for the F-100. I was assigned to the Armament Shop in the 822nd BM SQD. At first there were the B-26 Bomber(Props) on Base. Later on the B-57 Jet Bomber arrived without the Electronic Fire Control Sytm in the Nose, which was never installed. At one time they took the Fire Control Personels and assigned us to Radio/Comm. Shop, I do remember the Germany Staff Car the Comm boys used. The Fire Cont personels were myself. Herman White,Rooney,Wilson, who made Tech/Sgt befor leaving France. While in Radio/Comm the Fire Control personels were to Learn the SHORAN NAV SYSTEM. That did not last long, because they started to assimilate us into the SPECIAL WEAPONS LOADING CREW PROGRAM, which eventually having some of us permently assigned TDY to DET # 1 38TH BM GP at Landstul AB. Some remembrance while at Loan AB; the fly over of all the B-26 aircraft on Base before being Phase Out.(2)Capt. Smith the Operation Officer for 822nd BM SQD.Was well thought of by the personels.(3)I rembered on one of the new B-57 coming from the state, when the crew opened the revolving Bomb Door a bottle of Whiskey fell out onto the cement in fron of the Hanger and burst. I was on Guard Duty to supplement the Air Police at the time. (4)At the Commander Call we would have Ice Cold Beer Keg that would been flown in one of the Bomber Bomb Bay for 2 hours or more.(5)When ever the Base Bus broke down, we would have to ride on a 6x6 Truck to and from Town.(6)Open Base when we invited the French community on Base was always a big turn out. (7)Would like to know if any one from DET # 1 around. (8)I do have a few snapshot and a group picture of DET # 1 that I will try to send to the site. For Reference: I was from North Carolina when I first went into the AF. I have only been living in Houston, Tx for 20 years. 02/12/2005

Hello ... I came across this site while searching out information on my Uncle Leonard Norman Jonasson, an air gunner (Rear) Sgt RCAF with the RAF who, at the young age of only 17 (Falsified his birth certificate) was shot down and killed just NE of Laon somewhere around Pierrepont. I've seen the crash site as being at either several kms south of Marle or at Pierrepont Meuse or Bucy-les-Pierrepont. The mission was to bomb the Skoda Armaments Factory at Pilsen Czech. on the night of 16/17 1943. Sgt Jonasson and fellow crewmen were onboard a Halifax II bomber serial number DT575 MP-Y, 76th Squadron, and may have been shot down by Uffz Alfred P. Thiele. He is buried at Leisse and I have pictures of this site that a gentleman from the area was kind enough to send me. I know this is a longshot but as this is one of the few websites from the Laon area that is in English I was hoping that someone may be able to either help me in obtaining any little piece of information or at least point me to a possible source that could help. I'm looking for any newspaper reports, local histories, or personal stories handed down from this time ... pictures, while unexpected, would be welcome ... any eyewitness reports. First hand reports would be best but if anyone has heard any family or local stories passed down from this incident I would like to hear them. If anyone can help in any way please contact me at cjonasson@shaw.ca. Regards, Chuck Jonasson

A great site, thanks for creating it, I was stationed at Laon AFB from 1952 until 1954. I was a Staff Sergeant Headquarters Squadron assigned to the Staff Judge Advocates office working for Major Ralph K. Roberson and Lt Stanley Mestel.. When we arrived at Laon AFB in 1952 every enlisted man spent one half day on constructing base facilities and one half day performing our specialities. We lived in tents, but weekends in Paris made up for lousy living conditions. In 1953 a French lawyer (Henri Crepin - later Mayor of Coucy le Chateau), who worked in our office, and I flew to Cannes to rent a villa for the base. Every week 35 men were flown down to Cannes on a C47 for 7 days TDY R&R or $35 room and board. This was in response to the deal the GI's had in Germany for 7 days TDY R and R at Garmisch. This also made up for living in tents in a wheat field. In 1953 I bought a litle French Simca and drove all over Europe every chance I could get. Great memories. Hello to anyone who may remember me. Arnie Schapiro.

What a thrill to find this website! Lots of memories have come flooding back as I read all the letters. My husband (Kenton) and I lived in St. Gobain from 54 to 57--a wonderful experience. We lived in a large old house at #8 Rue de Lancival (I think that was the street name). M. & Mme Varlet owned the house and restaurant (downstairs) and what wonderful meals we had occasionally with them. Do any of you natives know the history of that house--it was supposed to have some interesting history connected with it. The street went down to the glass factory--I wonder if it is still in business? I was lucky enough to return to Laon in 1987 and the present owners (M. & Mme.Eck) very graciously took me upstairs so that I could see my former living quarters. They had purchased the house about 1956 and they remembered me--it was such a thrill! Thank you for letting me relive some wonderful memories--a wonderful website. I would love to hear from anyone that remembers us.

A great sight. It brings back a lot of memories. Enjoyed the week-end trips to Paris, Brussels, Amsterdam, and surrounding areas. I had an uncle killed in France in August 1944. A pilot in the 18th flew over the cemetery and took pictures for me to send to mt mom. I was as a crew on the RF-101C # 131. Had a son born at Chatteauroux in Nov 1959. I was stationed at Laon May 1959 - April 1962 in the 18TH TRS. Would like to hear from anyone during that time that remembers me.

As she doesn't speak english, I am pleased to translate Andree's message :
I am a grand-grand-mother and therefore have lived, as many others, humiliation, deprivations, lack of freedom ; we suffered bombings that made many victims here in Rouen and cities around ; it was the cost. But we are thankful to all those who gave their life, and to their families, for having helped us to get rid of the occupant ; we will never forget !... We let our children know, they are interested to better know our common history. Sometimes, we may have different opinions, that is the freedom of expression and the democracy ; between true friends, one must be able to argue without getting angry. Don't you agree ? yours ever, Andree PW.
P.S. : I'm corresponding since 1946 with a GI widow who died in 1988, and since having an Internet access I'm seeking for another Texas friend we received in our family in 1945.

Having lived on Laon AB as a dependent of my father, Col. Hood (deceased), who was Hospital Commander from '59-'61, I was overwhelmed by the hospitality of the French people, esp. Monsieur Bernard Croza, recently as we toured the base and the beautiful village of Laon. I had forgotten how truly unique the area around Laon is, and with Bernard's help I was able to see it with fresh eyes.

HAVE JUST DISCOVERED THIS WONDERFUL WEB SITE. SERVED IN THE 66 TAC HOSPITAL, 1962-1965. WAS THE MOST WONDERFUL YEARS OF MY LIFE. I HAVE SAID THAT IF THERE WAS A TIME I COULD RE-LIVE THIS WOULD BE IT. THE FOOD, THE CLIMATE, THE PEOPLE -- ALL WONDERFUL. UNTIL MY DEPARTURE FLIGHT WAS AIRBORN I HONESTLY HAD THE FEELING THAT AT ANY MOMENT I MIGHT BOLT OFF THE PLANE AND REMAIN THERE. SUCH ARE THE MEMORIES.

Bon Jour, I was stationed in the 66th Air Police K-9 Sectionat Laon AFB, France, from July 1958 to August 1961. A truly great, enjoyable, and most certainly the best assignment of my 24 year career in the USAF. I can most assurredly tell you that I vividly remember those terrible steps up the hill. However that cold beer at Susies by the Cathedral was well worth the effort. Had loads of fun at the Beet Factory Swimming pool as well. The Pizza place had the best escargots I have ever eaten there or any where else. What a GREAT Site. Sure enjoyed seeing Ray Mory at our LAPA reunion in Las Vegas Oct 2001. Sure hope to return one day to see Laon and surrounding area again. Keep up the good work. Bob Norris

Was a brat at Laon 62-65 with my parents; Dad was in the 18TRS. We initially lived in Nancy, then moved into GRH. Have very fond memories of growing up those years in France, going to fetes, bumper cars, delivering Stars and Stripes. Even brought home a Flandria moped (racing style). Still remember the city on the hill and the cathedral and the rounded off corners in the square that the tanks damaged in WWII. Made it to Verdun while stationed in Germany 88-91, passed Laon, didn't stop. Wish we had. Enjoy the site; I'll be back. Merci beaucoup! A bien tot mes amis!!

Jeff McLaughlin (San Francisco - USA, CA) EMAIL

What a wonderful site to discover! I was an AF brat at Laon AB from September 1954 to June 1958. My father was a Captain on the base, Jean W McLaughlin, initially attached to the 405th Bomb Squadron, but throughout our stay did much of the liasion work with the local Laon government and citizens because of his ability to speak French fluently and because he grew up in Paris. We lived at first in an old chateau in Autremoncourt, then moved into Laon, first at 12 Rue Paul Vivien, then 1 Rue Paul Vivien. I attended school both on the base, and also at a French Jesuit boarding school in Paris named "L'Ecole de Notre Dame". I have been back to Laon twice, once in 1987 and most recently October 2002. Each time I am amazed to see how much is the same, and yet there are definite changes. How old I felt during my recent visit to see the tram car that my sister and I rode up the hill to "Upper Laon" everyday now situated as a monument in front of the train station
